Retiring in Singapore
The pandemic has highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of various health systems and their capacity to manage major crises. These recent developments have prompted many to consider relocating to a new environment for a fresh start.
Singapore offers an exceptional quality of life with its world-class healthcare system, stable government, and renowned educational institutions. As a vibrant, multicultural city-state, Singapore is known for its efficient public services, modern infrastructure, and a blend of cultural influences from its diverse population. The city is also marked by its impressive skyline, abundant green spaces, and vibrant neighbourhoods, providing a unique living experience.

First step
Singapore is strategically located in Southeast Asia, and well-connected by major airlines to global destinations. With only a few hours’ flight from major cities like Tokyo, Sydney, and Hong Kong, Singapore is a convenient location for relocation.
If you are considering moving to Singapore, the first step is to choose your preferred residential area. Your decision may be influenced by factors such as the area’s residential property market, proximity to work, schools, or family, as well as the availability of local amenities.
Neighbourhoods like Orchard Road and Marina Bay are popular for their proximity to business hubs and vibrant lifestyle, whereas Bukit Timah and Holland Road are known for their proximity to prestigious schools and family-friendly environment. Each area offers its own unique living experience, so evaluate your own needs and preferences carefully.
Second step
After deciding where you want to live in Singapore, you will need to apply for the appropriate residency pass.
The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) handles the issuance of work passes and residency permits. For long-term residents or retirees, you may need to apply for a Long-Term Visit Pass or an Employment Pass, depending on your situation. If you are relocating for employment, your employer will typically assist with the application process.
If you are a citizen of an EU/EFTA country, you can enter Singapore for up to 90 days without a pass while you arrange your residency. For retirees or individuals without employment, you must demonstrate sufficient funds to cover your living expenses and hold valid medical and accident insurance.
Once you have obtained your residency permit, you can purchase property for primary residence in Singapore.
