EMPLOYMENT LAW: CONTRACTUAL / STATUTORY OVERTIME

Contractual/Statutory overtime

Singapore law distinguishes between normal hours of work and overtime.

Generally, the standard workweek is 44 hours spread over six days, and daily working hours cannot exceed 8 hours per day. On the other hand, any work done beyond the normal workweek is considered overtime. Overtime pay is typically calculated at 1.5 times the basic hourly rate.

Contractual overtime

The Employment Act (EA) governs overtime rules, providing minimum standards for employees. However, not all employees are covered by the EA. Those earning more than a specified amount are excluded.
